Springing forward

Dear lovely readers, I am two weeks and a few finals short of graduation so I have been away more than usual. Thanks for sticking around! I have lots to catch up on here.

Reminder, tomorrow is the last day to enter my giveaway. Enter here

Since I live in an apartment while I build my dream home, in my mind and live vicariously through Real Housewives of BH & NJ, I do not have space to keep my full wardrobe accessible. So, my big seasonal cleanings, wherein I swap in my seasonal appropriate clothes from storage, are also closet purges. I have to make myself part with items to justify new purchases. If I let my closet overflow I lose track of what I own and wear less items.

I wish I had a closet managing system a la Cher in Clueless! Will swivel be an app for that?
How do you keep track of your wardrobe?

I separate my clothes into categories of things to sell/consign, donate, fix, or toss.

I try to stay away from impulse purchases but they sometimes sneak in! I mitigate my loss by selling or consigning. Most career clothes cannot fetch near original value so I donate them to non-profits. I place aside some trendy or boring items for DIY projects. All else is trashed.

I also challenge myself to move things out of my closet by emptying my shopping bags and filling them with things they replace in my closet. I am more happy to part when I see the direct exchange.
My most recent purge
The following is a non-exhaustive list of places where you can donate career clothing. Also consider donating to your local battered women’s shelters.
 Do you have other suggestions?

The one item that never gets packed away and I cannot imagine parting with is my two tone submariner rolex. I wear it almost daily because it is a good contrast against an ultra feminine outfit and plays well with dressed down looks too. It is a costly investment but does not lose value quickly and is a good family heirloom. ;)
Here's an instagram pic of my favorite any season go to!

♥ Thanks for reading and supporting my blog!

  1. I have a round rotating closet. It is the same idea of the rotating ones at dry cleaners. I had 2 Home Depot workers help me through the design and then I paid friends with love to have them install it.

It took a weekend with a group of 5 and the final product is still rough but I still love the idea. I was thinking of sharing the before and after pics on hgtv for suggestions on how to finish out wall or better cover PVC.

  2. I wasn't sure what you meant by consigning and after I searched online about it I'm so excited about these! Are they trustworthy for selling better or buying? Can you tell me pro and cons please. Thank you!

    1. They can work for both. You just need to be knowledgeable about the brand so that you are not swindled. I also suggest at least starting off with a place that has a brick & mortar shop you can visit. I would also only shop at ones that have money back guarantees concerning authenticity. If you are selling your stuff you have to realize that value goes down on items and the consignment shops take different percentages of final sales. So, look around and haggle whether you are a shopper or seller.

If you have specific questions just email or tweet me.

  3. I have a suggestion - donate them to me!!

Aren't clothes always more fun when they're new - no matter what they are?

You can tell my comment that I also have issues with hoarding clothing, but at least you're able to part with it on a routine basis. I grow a sentimental relationship with each item, no matter how small, and simply can't give it up!

That's nice that you donate some things - especially work attire, because that's likely what people in need want most when job -hunting.

    Best,

    Gabrielle

  4. I am trying to get into the habit of removing old clothes from my wardrobe when I buy new things, I think it works well :) It's not perfect though! I try to donate all my old clothes - none of the clothes I own are very expensive anyway :)

  6. I found this idea on pinterest and it has worked for me. At the beginning of the season, turn all your coat hangers backwards. Then, replace them to normal when you wear a garment. If there are any backward hangers at the end of the season, you know what to donate.
I also am on a strict rule to wear all my dresses before I can repeat a dress because I have entirely too many dresses in my closet.
Hope this helps. Love your blog and follow you on bloglovin.

    1. I like this idea. Except that I have this weird secret... I must keep my hangers in the same direction because in case of a fire I want to be able to grab them and go, lol.

  7. I think this is great to purge things you do not use and donate it to the less fortunate. We sometimes shop so much that we purchase things that we do not actually need or want and trends change so often that it is easy to create a build up of items. I compare it to fasting lol and it is a great tax write off at the end of the year! Consigning is also a great way to earn some extra cash to purchase new items.

    1. Ahh yes, good point. Another good benefit of donating clothes is the tax write off!
