Chic in orange and green

Celebrate Halloween in a look that you can wear any day to the office.
Some jobs allow for costumes on halloween. My job is not one of those. So, this was my office appropriate way of channeling a pumpkin through color and textures.

I love statement jackets and this is one of my fall favorites. Not only is this Carolina Herrera trench a fun pop of orange with a belted waist, it has a train the looks amazing when you are hit by a gust of wind.

50 Classics Challenge

For this week of the classics challenge I paired a 100% silk day dress with heeled sandals. A dress like this is how you can wear green and red together without looking like you belong in a Christmas greeting card (despite the ornament-like print). Playing up a non-Christmas color helps offset the otherwise holiday specific color combo.

Rainy day blues... and reds

How to dress for work on rainy days.
A gray-blue cloudy sky is the perfect backdrop for pops of color.
Although I have a collection of rain boots, I often turn to my Ferragamo jellies or patent leather Tory Burch flats. I prefer flats when rain boots may make me too hot or when I need to go straight to court or a meeting without changing my shoes.

50 Classics Challenge: Business Attire

Here is my 'wear to work' look for week two of Petite JD's Classics Challenge:

Although the classics list for this challenge is detailed it is missing some of my favorite categories: a sheath dress, diamond necklace, and leather jacket.

Do you own or would you strive to own everything on this classics list or do you have your own wardrobe "must have" list?

A scarf manipulated into a belt and worn underneath a cardigan or blazer gives your outfit a certain je ne sais quoi. This extra (work appropriate) kick helps make classic pieces feel modern and youthful.

Banana Republic top, Datejust Rolex, Diamond heart pendant necklace, Hermès scarf, J Crew sweater, Louis Vuitton bowling montaigne purse, Salvatore Ferragamo parodia heels, Theory skirt, Urban Outfitters opaque stockings, Vintage ring

Law protecting squatters?

Lady Gaga's legal fight against her fan

Imagine you are a popular fashion blogger and someone wants to take advantage of that fame so she puts up a website with a name similar to your blog but with a different domain name ending. If this happens you may not be successful in challenging the good faith website's creator.

One of Lady Gaga's recent legal battles was against the creator of LadyGaga.org wherein Lady Gaga alleged to the National Arbitration Forum that the website violated her trademark and was created in bad faith. Three panelists at  ruled the site could stand; pursuant to ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, in order to take a domain away from a registrant via arbitration, the Complainant must prove:

  1. Domain is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark or service mark in which Complainant has rights; and
  2. Respondent has no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name; and
  3. Domain name has been registered and is being used in bad faith

For the first element, Lady Gaga gets a check. The second is arguable but the site genuinely seems like a virtual Lady Gaga shrine fan site. What skewed the decision here was the site owner's claims that there were no "sponsored links or links to third-party websites which sell merchandise bearing Complainant's trademark."

  • I wonder what the panel would say of (new?) part of the site sectioned off to list family sites, elite affiliates, and top affiliates.

Do you think it would be similarly fair for people to have fan sites for their favorite bloggers or designers?

  • My answer varies on the facts but I lean towards not allowing such websites if the original trademark owner rejects it. Although such websites may help with advertising or popularity, there are many situations where those benefits would not outweigh personal interests (such as keeping the domain name itself).

50 Classics Challenge

My friend who works at a law office gets to wear jeans to her job! -Well, only today, in support of the fight against breast cancer on Lee National Denim Day. So I consider this post my participation! ;)

How to wear denim to work: make your outfit smart casual with a top you'd normally wear to work.

Is your job participating? Or is your dress code ever flexible enough for jeans?

Petite JD is hosting a "50 Classics Challenge." This week's challenge was to create a casual day time look only using items from the following chart:

To keep in line with the classics guide, I swapped out my equestrian style jacket for a classic wool coat paired with a silk scarf. IRL the play on textures is great.

Outfit details:
Ann Taylor Loft blouse, Gucci jacket, Hermès belt, Hermès jumping boots, Hermès silk scarf, J Brand denim, J Crew coat, Louis Vuitton damier print purse, Rolex submariner watch, YSL arty ring

Bridging the Gap with equestrian style

In honor of Gap's current 30% off sale, let me introduce you to my Gap pick for casual wear this Fall: the skinny riding pants, available in black and olive (shown on me). I paired them with a fitted double collar blouse for a structured look but these pants also work with tanks or tees. I bought the regular fit because I prefer an ankle length instead of the petite fit, which have a 3/4 fit.

A budget friendly way to transition from a student wardrobe to a professional one is to buy pieces that seamlessly transition between work and play. Here is my law school OOTD. Attire like this is acceptable in casual (not business casual) work environments. Do not mistake business casual to mean business on the top and casual on the bottom.

I am not small enough to be a professional jockey but the fashion is half the fun anyway.  ;)
I love equestrian style fashion because it is classic and comfortable. -I collect riding boots and jumping boots. (I use the word "collect" to justify the spending by classifying it as a hobby).

Find individuality in a muted palette

Fun with suspenders and Theory pants straight off the rack!

A classic black and white ensemble can be reminiscent of Chanel but with a gray scale palette you run the risk of looking like a waitress.

Distinguish yourself from a hostess or waitress by adding an unexpected accessory like suspenders and a pair of heels with a pop of color. The cut* of these pants are perfect for showcasing shoes, so I chose my green suede shoes since I have been waiting for the fall to pop them out again.

Prefer black shoes? I suggest pointed or peep toe heels with red polish and red lips (not for work):

Anne Fontaine suspenders, Anne Fontaine blouse, Theory Pants,
Louboutin heels (decolette and no prive)

Do you own suspenders?

I like suspenders on women and men (think Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass on "Gossip Girl"--not Larry King). Most of my friends hate them. These suspenders are of great quality and are fully adjustable but they are quite pricey. You can replicate the look of the feminine flower detailing by using pins or broaches on any suspenders.

* These ibbey pants (graduation fabric) have a cropped cut so they fit me with no hemming required.
